I practice Hellenistic astrology \u2014 the original Western astrological tradition, recovered from Greek and Latin sources over the past few decades and slowly returning to living use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How I came to the tradition<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I came to astrology the way many people do \u2014 through the slow realization that the modern, popular version I’d grown up around was a thin layer over something much older and much more substantive. The deeper I learned, the clearer it became that the Hellenistic tradition had a coherence and a precision I hadn’t known to look for. Charts began to speak in specific terms about specific lives, where before they had been giving generic answers. The difference was the technical scaffolding the older material provides \u2014 sect, dignity, the houses and their joys, the timing techniques that turn a static birth chart into the moving texture of a particular life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have been studying and practicing this material for several years now, and I expect to be a student of the tradition for the rest of my life. That posture is part of what I bring to the work. The chart rewards patience; the reading rewards a practitioner who has not yet decided that they know everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Training<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I trained \u2014 and continue to train \u2014 through Adam Elenbaas at Nightlight Astrology<\/a>. Nightlight’s curriculum is grounded in the Hellenistic tradition and draws on the work of the modern translators and teachers \u2014 Project Hindsight, Robert Schmidt, Robert Hand, Chris Brennan, Demetra George, and others \u2014 who have made these techniques available again in English. Adam’s approach is careful, philosophical, and humane. His teaching has shaped the way I sit with a chart, and the way I sit with the people whose charts I read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the practice as sacred<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For me, this work is not only technical. Astrology is part of my spiritual identity \u2014 a sacred practice, not only a craft. As a Two-Spirit person, I carry ways of knowing in which the chart, the body, and the spirit are not separable; reading a chart is, for me, of a piece with the longer ceremony of a life. The Hellenistic tradition is not the same as the traditions of my own people, but in its respect for the integrity of a life \u2014 in its insistence that the chart is the description of a soul in time, not a list of personality traits \u2014 I find a kinship I did not always expect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On who this practice is for<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

My practice is inclusive. The reading I bring to a chart is shaped by Black and Indigenous perspectives alongside the older Mediterranean material, and I read with care for the lives the ancient texts did not always anticipate. I read with care for queer, trans, Two-Spirit, and gender-expansive people. Whatever else a chart is, it is the chart of an actual person living an actual life, and the reading should belong to that person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
